Mineirão Solar Photovoltaic Plant is a landmark of the national photovoltaic generation. Installed on the roof of one of the 2014 World Cup headquarters, the plant has an installed power of 1,320 kW, being, at the time of its construction, the largest photovoltaic plant in the world built on the roof of a soccer stadium.

“Governador Magalhães Pinto” Stadium, known as Mineirão, is a National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute listed property and has a complex and striking architecture, which contributes to the plant’s design being an interesting example of engineering solutions in the sector.

The project was made possible by an agreement between Cemig, Minas Gerais state government, and the stadium concessionaire, Minas Arena. Its original conception counted on the partnership of the Federal University of Santa Catarina through the Ideal Institute and the basic project was developed by the German consultancy company Lahmeyer. The executive project and the construction work were carried out by a Portuguese company, which won the international bidding in July 2012.

Mineirão SPP went into operation, after commissioning, on April 25, 2014.

With an installed power of 1420 kWp, it has a capacity factor of approximately 14%. The 5910 photovoltaic modules of 240 Wp of polycrystalline silicon technology, occupy an area of 9500 m2, this figure represents 60% of the stadium’s total coverage area.

Solar energy, converted into electrical energy by the photovoltaic modules, flows to the 88 inverters of 15 kW distributed along the stadium, is forwarded to the elevating substations and then to the 13.8 kV grid, releasing this energy to the stadium and other consumers of the Distributor.

CEMIG GT owns 100% of the plant’s capital, however, the agreement with the stadium’s concessionaire foresees the transfer of 10% of the energy generated by the plant, contributing, among other intangible benefits, to the maintenance of the stadium’s sustainability certificate (LEED Certification).
