Wind energy: how the force of winds is transformed into electricity
Cemig is a pioneer in wind energy and today has two plants in operation: “Praias do Parajuru” and “Volta do Rio”, both in the state of Ceará.
Also known as wind power, wind energy is present in the masses of air and wind that can be harnessed and used to generate electricity. The process for harnessing wind energy depends on wind turbines or windmills, equipment responsible for, upon contact with wind, rotate and generate other forms of energy, such as electricity, for example.
The energy generated by the wind power plants also known as windfarms can prevent the annual release of approximately 146 thousand tons of CO2 (carbon dioxide) and 920 tons of SO2 (sulfur dioxide) into the atmosphere, if this energy were generated by thermoelectric plants.
We at Cemig are pioneers in wind power generation, being the first Brazilian concessionaire to install a wind power plant connected to the integrated electric system, the Morro do Camelinho Experimental Power Plant, in 1994, which has already been deactivated.
Nowadays Cemig has two wind power plants in operation: Volta do Rio and Praia do Parajuru, both in the State of Ceará.
Investing in windfarms is part of Cemig’s strategy to grow economically, environmentally and socially in a sustainable way. Due to this awareness, the company has an outstanding position in the national scenario, with participation in more than 90% of clean sources in its energy matrix.
